Wilmington NC Gyms, Fitness Centers, and Workout Facilities

OK - I promised you a follow up to our Wilmington NC Dessert post with one about gyms and fitness centers - so here it is!

When joining a gym, it's important to find a good fit. The right gym will meet your needs, and motivate you to come back to exercise on a regular basis. Joining a gym is a big commitment, so it's important to research your options before signing on the dotted line. When considering a particular gym, set up a tour to get a feel for the place. Try to set up this tour during the time you usually exercise. Most local gyms offer trial passes before you join ranging from a day to two weeks, so definitely take advantage of that to see if it's a good fit for you. The Wilmington area offers a number of different options from the very basic, to small boutique fitness clubs to large facilities with tons of amenities.

The Wilmington Athletic Club is the area's most complete fitness facility. With over 35,000 square feet, they offer indoor basketball and racquetball courts, a Pilates studio, yoga and group exercise classes, weights and cardio equipment, personal training, a smoothie bar and café, a spa, locker rooms complete with steam and sauna, and childcare. In addition, the WAC has an outdoor pool that is open year round, and also offers swim lessons and swim team for the kids. Also outdoors is a large climbing wall and running trails. The WAC offers a corporate discount for many local employers, as well as student and senior rates.

Gold's Gym has three locations in the area: Wilmington (at the corner of Shipyard and College), North Wilmington, and Porter's Neck. There are also locations in Shalotte and Jacksonville. Gold's Gym offers weights and cardio equipment, personal training, group fitness classes and childcare. Some locations also feature Gold's Beach spray tanning as well as nutrition coaching. Gold's also offers corporate discounts and a military discount.

O2Fitness, located in Mayfaire Town Center, offers a beautiful, upscale facility filled with natural light. Group exercise classes, yoga, weights and cardio equipment, personal training, locker rooms with sauna, and childcare are all part of the O2 experience. Unique features include a quiet Cardio Getaway Theater, outdoor turf training, and an O2 Express Room offering easy-to-follow cardio and strength building programs in one efficient 30-minute workout. Corporate discount program is also available.

While the Wilmington YMCA is an older facility, it is still a popular option. The cardio and weight training options are more limited, and the locker rooms favor function over appearance, but the class offerings and children's programming are favorites among local moms. In particular, the Zumba craze that has swept the nation is attracting people to the Y, featuring favorite local instructor, Karson Reed. The Y offers 10 Zumba classes each week and even offers Kids Zumba after school two days a week. The Y features an indoor pool with swim lessons, as well as seasonal outdoor sports leagues, after school care and summer camps. Childcare while parents exercise is also available. The Y offers student, senior and corporate discounts, as well as free or discounted military memberships.

The Crest Fitness Club, located in the Galleria Mall, offers a boutique style, personalized experience by limiting the number of members to ensure there's never a crowd. The Crest offers cardio and weight training equipment, group exercise classes, personal training, tanning and childcare. There are different levels of membership to suit members' preferences and needs.

Planet Fitness has several Wilmington franchises, and offers the flexibility of month to month plans. A much smaller and more basic facility than most of the others, Planet Fitness offers cardio and weight training equipment and personal training. Some levels of membership also offer tanning and unlimited guests. Childcare and group fitness classes are not available. However, memberships start at just $19.99 per month.

The Open Studio is a brand new facility in The Forum on Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington.  This studio has a different vision for a fitness center, combining yoga and barre classes with fitness, dance, art, and theater.  They have a beautiful retail space that includes health and beauty products, books, props, and unique clothing for yoga, fitness, dance, and leisure.  In addition to traditional yoga and fitness, they will also offer a Yoga Fusion class combining yoga with weights as well as a Run/Yoga class that shows how the two practices can work together to form a strong and balanced mid/body workout.  The mission of the Open Studio is to promote a mind/body connection through the arts + wellness in an intimate and comfortable environment.

Kate Mejaski has a background in travel writing and photography, as well as destination marketing. Where to Eat Dessert in Wilmington, North Carolina

OK - I'm going to have to follow this post with a list of Wilmington gyms and fitness centers BUT there are so many great spots in Wilmington to satisfy your sweet tooth, from donuts at the beach to elaborately decorated designer cakes. Of course the cupcake and frozen yogurt bar crazes have also hit Wilmington. So, on to the sweetness…

A local favorite, Apple Annie's Bakeshop has been in Wilmington since 1984. The family who owns it has been in the baking business for six generations! From their location on Kerr Avenue, they serve cookies, cakes, pastries, bagels, and more, and also take custom orders for special celebrations.

Speaking of special celebrations, if you need a birthday or wedding cake, Imaginary Cakes is definitely the place to go. Cindy Lavardiere started her cake business out of her home, and has grown into a new shop on Oleander. Her specialty is using buttercream in a way that makes it look like fondant (but taste so much better!) She holds an art degree, and her designs definitely reflect her artistic ability. And, the cakes are just delicious!

Another wonderful local cake shop is the Hot Pink Cake Stand. A cute little shop downtown, you can stop in for a cupcake in one of many unique flavors of the day such as Blueberry Cobbler, Caramel Bourbon, or Key Lime. Vegan and gluten free options are also available. Or, place an order for custom cupcakes or a cake. Their adorable custom designs are available for all special occasions, including weddings.

Downtown features a number of other great options for your sweet tooth. Be sure to check out Sugar on Front Street. Housed in Old Books on Front Street, it's a perfect place to grab a cup of coffee, a muffin and a good book. Cookies, pies and cakes are also available. For a fun dessert experience, the Little Dipper is just down Front Street. Choose from traditional dark, milk or white chocolate fondue with fruit, cream puffs, marshmellows, pound cake and other treats for dipping, or try one of the many other creations such as Fluffernutter with chocolate, marshmellow, fluff and peanut butter. You can also add a liquoer to your fondue for a little kick. There is also a Kilwin's downtown with yummy ice cream, fudge, and a huge assortment of specialty candies.

No dessert is as refreshing as ice cream at the beach. Squigley's is a popular spot in Carolina Beach, and in Wrightsville Beach, there is a Kohl's Frozen Custard, and a Rita's Italian Ice. The frozen yogurt bar trend has also hit Wilmington, and just a short drive from each of the beaches you'll find SurfBerry (in Wrightsville Beach) and Fuzzy Peach shops all over town. The self-serve yogurt in a variety of unique flavors, and the topping bar allows you to completely customize your treat. Also popular at the beach are donut shops. A walk-up counter, there's always a line for the famous Britt's Donuts at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. In Wrightsville Beach, the Shore Shack offers donuts in a casual beach environment.

Yum - enjoy!!

Vacation Rentals by Owner in Wilmington, NC

There are so many reasons to plan a vacation in Wilmington, North Carolina.  My family first came here on an extended family vacation in Topsail Island.  We rented a big house and celebrated Christmas vacation together.  From there, we drove into downtown Wilmington and really fell in love with the city and the area.  With easy proximity to the beach and a downtown culture, southeastern coastal NC is an ideal place to plan a vacation.

I know many families visit here while their kids are attending UNCW.  Or they live in the NC and need a trip to the beach.  Many people vacation here from out of state because it's easy to get here (RT 40 is an easy drive, ILM airport is super to fly in and out of) and there's a lot to see and do while on vacation  Plus, there are a ton of great restaurants, awesome shopping, and, of course, trips to the beach any time of year.

A great way to spend your time here is to find a vacation rental in town.  Look for a home that's walking distance to restaurants and shopping or a beach house where the whole family can convene.  MasterpieceRentals.com is a website that our company just took over and it offers a place for visitors to find vacation rentals by owner all over the world - including Wilmington and coastal NC.  Property owners can list their rental on the site get found by people searching online for vacation rentals in the area.  Anyone interested can contact property owners directly.  It's a really cool way to travel and experience an area.

If you're still looking for reasons to plan a vacation in Wilmington, here are some other things to do during your stay:
  • Live Music, Theater, and Comedy - We have a vibrant music and theater scene here in town and shows are going on all the time.  Check out encorepub.com or whatsonwilmington.com to find what's happening when you plan to visit.
  • Wilmington Boat Tours - Explore our area by boat either on the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway, or book a deep sea fishing excursion.  We love boating here and suggest you get out on the water during your vacation.  Visit wilmingtonwatertours.com or wrightsvillebeachscenictours.com to book a trip.
  • Public Parks, Gardens, and Plantations - Wilmington, New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick Counties have beautiful parks you can explore.  Some are free while others, like Airlie Gardens, charge admission to help with the upkeep.  See our Wilmington Parks page to learn more.
  • Historic Wilmington Tours - Explore historic Wilmington NC by taking advantage of a number of tours - narrated horsedrawn carriage rides, trolley tours, walking tours, and even ghost tours of Wilmington.  These are really fun and you even learn a couple things!
As you can tell, there are plenty of things to do on a Wilmington vacation.  And booking a vacation rental by owner is a great way to take in the city.  Be sure to leave a comment to let me know your favorite thing to do during a Wilmington vacation and I can get it added to the list.

Rx Restaurant Opens on Castle Street in Wilmington NC

Wilmington has a dynamic (and delicious) restaurant scene.  We have some staples that have been around forever, many new restaurants that open every month, and, unfortunately, restaurants that just don't make it.  But I'm always hopeful for the new ones!

I am especially excited for the opening of Rx Restaurant on the corner of Castle Street and 5th Ave in Wilmington.  This is my neighborhood and I've watched this particular space go through many iterations - starting with Hall's Restaurant when we first moved here.  I haven't been there in years, even though it's right around the corner.

But that's about to change!  Rx Restaurant opens to the public tonight, July 10th, and I can't wait to go.  It looks like the cozy, artsy, yummy neighborhood restaurant that would be perfect for this area.  I've heard good things so far and it seems like these guys really care about food and having a nice place to gather.

Let me know if you've been there and what you think.  You can follow them on Facebook to learn more here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rx-Restaurant-and-Bar/263370843739768.
